HOMOLOGOUS ORGANS AND EXAMPLES (CBSE 10TH)

 Homologous Organs:

Homologous organs are organs that have the same basic structure and origin but may perform different functions in different organisms.

  • Similar internal structure

  • Common evolutionary origin

  • Different functions due to adaptation

Examples:

  • Forelimb of a human, wing of a bat, leg of a horse, and flipper of a whale
  • All have the same bone structure (humerus, radius, ulna), but:
  • Human forelimb → grasping
  • Bat wing → flying
  • Whale flipper → swimming
